The foundation and formation of the INM library began in 1956 and took place simultaneously with the development of the institute.
The library’s holdings present literature on materials science, physics and solid mechanics, crystallography, fracture theory, friction theory, physical chemistry, synthesis of diamond and other synthetic superhard materials, cutting and grinding theory, tool production, application of superhard materials and tools made from them in various sectors of the national economy, powder metallurgy, diamond drilling of wells.
Initially, the library was part of the structure of the technical information bureau, then the scientific and technical information department, since 1995 – the information and computing center, since 2000 – the information and analytical and communications department, and since 2003 it has been part of the scientific and organizational department. The library has changed its location several times, moving five times during its history.
Library collection: total 95 thousand copies, including documents in foreign languages 16,500 copies; books, brochures – 37,580 copies, periodicals – 47,370 copies, normative production and practical publications – 10 thousand. The library has access to the Internet.
After graduating from the library faculty of the Kyiv Technical School for the Training of Cultural and Educational Workers, on October 29, 1956, Nataliya Mykhailivna Karmazina came to work as the head of the library of the Experimental Plant of Hard Alloy Tools. The library collection at that time was small, mainly technical reports, literature on mining, tools and metalworking, which were transferred from the Kharkiv branch of “Tverdosplava”. There was one table and a bookcase in a small room where other services worked.
Bakul V.M. realized the enormous importance of information in the development of production and paid great attention to the acquisition of library funds, so together with N.M. Karmazina they traveled to bookstores for six months and selected literature for the library. This laid the foundation for a scientific approach to the acquisition of library funds, its rational use and propaganda. By the end of 1959, there were already about 5 thousand documents.
Readers came not many, so the main work was carried out in the workshops – the mobile library helped to get acquainted with new products.
In 1961, which became a turning point due to the creation of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Synthetic Superhard Materials and Instruments with a special design bureau and a research plant, the library was faced with new urgent tasks and opened up prospects for comprehensive information support for production and scientific developments in the field of diamond synthesis.
In 1961, after graduating from the technical school, Nadiya Nikolaevna Bozhenok came to work in the library, who worked until 1994, and in 1963, after graduating from the Moscow Institute of Culture, bibliographer Mara Ivanivna Koleva, who worked until 1989. In different years, the library was staffed by Gontar Galina Matviyevna, Lyskova Neonila Stefanivna, Timanova Lyudmila Ivanivna (1978-1999) – head. library 1988-1999, Pilkevych Nataliya Stepanivna (1989-1994, 2005-2012), Kolodnitskaya Nadiya Ivanivna (from 1983 to the present) – since 2001 head of the library.
The number of employees of the institute is growing, only in 1962-1964 more than 300 university graduates were hired, scientists and specialists of various profiles were invited. And already in 1964 there were 1298 readers in the library, to whom 18796 documents were issued, 27 exhibitions were organized, more than 2 thousand copies of literature were purchased. Literature that was not found in the library was ordered through interlibrary loan, this was about 370 copies in 1964.
At all stages of their work, library staff used various methods of library and bibliographic work to fully meet the needs of the Institute’s scientists in the latest information. The topics of acquiring library funds are expanding, book exhibitions are organized, on the 5th and 20th of each month Information Days, literature reviews, and reader conferences are held. In the hall, new books, periodicals, and bibliographic materials for viewing that had arrived at the NTB in two weeks were displayed on tables and display cases. Lists of new arrivals for the Information Day were posted on stands in the dining room, in the powder building, in the library, and in the SKB. Groups of technical informants were created, the main task of which was to regularly study new technical literature, select from it technical innovations useful for implementing the plan of scientific and research work, and special attention was paid to the degree of novelty of the printed material. Technical information workers worked in close cooperation with the National Library of Ukraine, and a “Memoir for Technical Information Workers” was compiled.
In 1967, following the results of the Republican Review of Technical Libraries of the Ukrainian SSR, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Soviet power and for the high performance achieved, the library was awarded the Diploma of the Republican Council of Technical Information Workers and the III Prize of the State Planning Commission of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR.
The report for 1967 indicates the number of the library’s collection – more 36 thousand units, readers – 1650, to whom about 28.5 thousand copies of literature were issued, 11 conversations were held in laboratories, 10 library posters were designed, such as “The Path of the Book to the Reader”, “Use Catalogs”, “Take Care of the Book”, “Bibliography to Help with Scientific Work”, etc. 360 copies of literature were received from 19 libraries of the country for the IBA.
